On Tuesday 18th November we're hosting our monthly spoken word night at the Bar Des Arts, Guildford with three guests from different corners of the poetry world and of course the open mic.
Alwyn Marriage lives in Guildford. Her varied career in the arts has included work as a university Philosophy lecturer, editor of a journal, and Chief Executive of two international literacy and literature NGOs. She has lectured and read her poetry all over the UK and abroad. At present she's working as a poet, lecturer and writer, and she is Managing Editor of the publishing house, Oversteps Books. She is also a Research Fellow in the School of English and Languages of the University of Surrey. Alwyn is the author or editor of eight books; her poetry, articles and reviews are published widely in newspapers, magazines and journals; and she has recently started writing novels.
Graham Buchan says that he was the product of an unholy alliance between a German Shepherd Father and a Swiss Roll Model. From the outset he decided to be a consummate liar. He won the Forward Prize for Presumption and the Plath-Hughes Award for Matrimonial Concord. Graham firmly believes that poetry, and its practitioners, will feed the poor, stop the war and find a cure. His book, 'There is Violence in these Vapours', is a moderate-seller.
Graham Brown was born in Aldershot in 1953. He’s written poetry since 1976 and has appeared at many venues, including the Hastings National Poetry Festival. He ran ‘Stand and Deliver’ Open Mic in Newcastle between 1996 and 2000. Now he lives on the Isle of Wight and performs at events in Southampton, Portsmouth, Reading and Guildford and anywhere else that will have him! Recently, we hear, he has taken to performing in stage dramas, too.
We also have a mini-set from Gareth Toms, who comes from Portsmouth and has been a frequent contributor to our events. We met him when he was performing at the Hammer and Tongues Festival in Portsmouth last year. He's a regular reader at the "Write Angle" poetry night in Petersfield, Hampshire, which is also on a Tuesday, but he's playing hookey!
All that - and all the 5 minute open mic readers you can eat - including, we're pleased to report, Robert Garnham of the fabled Blue Walnut - all free!
