Ray is a regular reader at the mic in Guildford and writes prolifically. His poems in the voice of Alan Bennett are drily humorous but here he is in a contemplative mood. Ray is also a talented musician.
I can feel the sadness of the dead
as they float before me,
or is it just that I begrudge life
on its punishing plains
while they swim free
and pity me?
memories drop in like old friends
with shared thoughts
to visit the crowded city
the city of no gates.
They wander in through a veil
tearing down old barriers
where the security of time past
It's open house -
you may look but don't touch
your presence may worry me too much.
